Sixth Grade twins, Sarah and Peter Holz, lose their comfortable city lives when their mother is confined to a tuberculosis sanatorium and their father dies after becoming bankrupt in the financial Panic of 1893. Shipped to their grandmother’s long vacant country bungalow, their lives darken when they enter a bleak orphanage where Peter is stalked and assaulted. Goaded by vengeful school classmates to prove he’s not a sissy, City boy, Peter agrees to vandalize the seemingly derelict and abandoned cottage of the horrible Stedham Woods Witch. She catches him in the act and threatens that the child-snatching, demon, Black Krampus, will punish him. Remorseful, he makes amends and discovers that within the walls of this horrid Witch’s dwelling, lives the elegant, grandmotherly, Cassie, who teaches the twins how to send magical letters to St. Nicholas who might restore their family, lives, and fortune. She presents them with an Advent Wreath and teaches them the formalities and meaning of the candle-lighting observances as well as the tradition of the Yule Log and the Jesse Tree. Each carries mysterious stories and presents twists to their troubled lives. But hurry, all conditions to satisfy St. Nicholas' enchantments and miracle-wishes must be satisfied by midnight Christmas day or vanish forever.
